The solutions that VAS has to offer often play a quiet background role on many successful farms. It is the producers, veterinarians, nutritionists and consultants that implement these solutions every day that make the difference. The people are what make these solutions great. Here are some news articles about them.

Meet Dairy Dreams!

08/26/2013 Liz Doornink

At VAS, we have a wide variety of customers throughout the world. These customers are all vastly different in personality and the way they choose to manage their operations. We hope you enjoy learning about our VAS customers as much as we enjoy providing them with the needed tools to manage successful businesses. This month we had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Don and Ann Niles of Dairy Dreams, LLC in Casco, Wisconsin.

Don and Ann Niles

When you first step out of your vehicle at Dairy Dreams, LLC, the first thing you notice is the beauty and cleanliness of this dairy operation located in the dairy meca of Wisconsin.  As you walk towards the offices, the very next thing you notice is the warm reception you receive from Don and Ann Niles.
Dairy Dreams LLC is owned by Don Niles of Casco, WI and John Pagel of Kewaunee, WI.  Don is the Manager of this well managed facility and Ann provides the added support to run this operation smoothly.  Prior to managing a dairy facility, Don was a veterinarian in the same town from 1983 to 1998.  In 1998, he left practice to travel to California on behalf of Monsanto Dairy Business as a Technical Service Specialist.  Around 2001, Don and John began discussing the possibility of building a dairy in Casco.  Both men were noticing that the dairy industry seemed to be booming in Wisconsin due to its superior infrastructure.  This was a project that excited both of them and it would also bring Don, Ann and their children back to the community they loved.  By March of 2002, the “dream” had become reality and Don and John were milking 1400 cows with plans to expand in the future.
Today, Dairy Dreams, LLC is milking 2800 cows 3x per day with cows averaging 90+ pounds per day.  Just recently, they chose to bring all the youngstock back home and raise them on-site.  Don is extremely happy with the new heifer facility/freestall they built to house the remainder of their herd.  Young calves are housed in single and super hutches before being moved to the new freestall.  The ability to raise replacement heifers on site brings some additional control back to the dairy and allows Don and his employees to manage growth, health and reproduction easier.  A farm of this magnitude takes a dedicated team of superior employees working 24/7, 365 days per year.  Steve Lambrecht is the farm’s Herd Manager and Hilario Barrera is the dairy’s Parlor Manager; both of these men assist Don in managing the cows and people for Dairy Dreams, LLC.

Dairy Dreams, LLC utilizes DairyComp 305, FeedWatch, WeighRite and the Pocket CowCard to help manage their dairy operation.  Don has indicated that his favorite software program is the DairyComp 305 because he has evolved with the program and it has evolved with him.  He feels that VAS is unique not only in our products but in the customer reports we can help design based on the needs of the facility.  He is extremely happy with his vet lists, shot programs, foot trim and hospital lists.  All help provided needed information easily and accurately.  When asked how VAS products have assisted his operation, Don replied “As a dairyman with a veterinary background, I am in the habit of trying to use a diagnostic approach to dairy problems and questions.  Instead of a sick cow, my “patient” is my own dairy.  VAS products, including DC305, Feed Watch and Weighrite are the instruments I use to identify problems and find solutions.  They encompass all important aspects of the operation, and have the versatility to focus on exactly where I want to look.”

There is more to Don and Ann than the cows….they have two very successful and dynamic children, Angela and John.  Angela just recently graduated from UW-River Falls with a degree in Dairy Science.  She is currently working on a 3000 cow dairy operation in Australia for six months gaining invaluable experience!!  John is a student at UW-Madison but has also been abroad to study.  He recently spent three months in Siberia, Russia as a dairy intern and loved each moment of that experience.
Both Don and Ann enjoy being involved in the community they love.  Don is currently serving as President of the Kewaunee County Dairy Promotion Board and they do a bang up job of educating consumers about agriculture!!!  In addition to community involvement and time spent with friends, the entire family enjoys boating, traveling and scuba diving!!

We at the VAS family would like to take this opportunity to thank Don and Ann Niles, along with John Pagel for their commitment to our products and their willingness to provide feedback that allows us to create additional management tools for dairies throughout the world.
