Valley Agricultural Software (VAS) and CafoPro announced a partnership at Connect Summit 2018 for the integration of data to improve sustainability and environmental factors on dairy farms, while also driving profit through less waste and more proactive decision making.

VAS (Tulare, Calif.) is a global leader in dairy management software focusing on milk production, feed management and animal health. CafoPro is a web-based EPA and state compliance software package that allows dairy farmers to track and report all compliance initiatives in one central program.

The all-new, web-based VAS Platform — including DairyComp, FeedComp and ParlorComp — allows CafoPro customers to pull in dairy-specific data in real time for more precise analysis of factors such as electricity use, water use and the overall effectiveness of current dairy infrastructure on a per-cow basis.

“This new integration saves considerable time and removes guesswork as dairies crunch numbers on a daily “per-head” basis, using real numbers, instead of rough projections spread out over months or years based on conjecture.” says Norman Mullin, president, CafoPro.

“The definition of sustainability is continued improvement, and with that comes less waste, less impact on the environment and greater profits for the dairy producer,” says Norman Mullin, president, CafoPro. “This new integration saves considerable time and removes guesswork as dairies crunch numbers on a daily “per-head” basis, using real numbers, instead of rough projections spread out over months or years based on conjecture.”

“It also automates the data input process, which makes it more likely that dairy producers will engage with it and make more impactful decisions about their business, and do so more frequently.”

Specific examples of where the new partnership can drive positive change include:

  • More accurately identifying total electricity use per animal throughout the entire dairy, and identifying areas where electricity use can be lowered or made more efficient.
  • Identifying gallons of water per day, or gallons per hundredweight of milk, used by a dairy — and then working on ways to reduce that amount of water without negatively impacting animal health or washing processes (particularly critical in drier regions, like the Southwest).
  • Viewing, in total, the entire energy use and utility stresses of a dairy in relation to the total number of animals moving through the facility, and ways that farmers can improve that infrastructure to make the dairy more efficient.

“The integration here really has the ability to empower dairy farmers to make smarter decisions, sooner, that will have greater long-term positive effects on their business,” says Tim Taylor, CEO, VAS. “In a business that operates on razor-thin margins, every financial and operational advantage helps, and bringing all of this data together in a web-based integration provides dairies with another tool to further pad those margins.”
